Contribution to the NALAS Panel Discussion "Challenges and impact of the refugee crisis on local governments"

Objectives and results
The purpose of the Panel Discussion held on October 2, 2015 in Zagreb was exchange among Mayors and representatives of most affected Cities in order to identify the policy issues which the LGAs may need to address, the needs of local governments to maintain their public services, good and bad practices.
The main conclusions:
1.Local governments are the first affected by the refugee influx, thus they have to be considered as a key stakeholder and supported by the national government and international community in dealing with this issue.
2. Increased cooperation with central governments is necessary as well as better coordination at regional level.
Implemented activities
1. AACT presentation on the tasks of Austrian local governments in the refugee crisis and their cooperation with the regional and national governments
